The Holy Year 1975
Rome & Basilicas Jubilee. PB Book
Closely tied in with the history of Christianity and particularly Catholicism, the Jubilee celebrations represent a periodic renewal of faith involving a mystic coming together of the Pope and the faithful. According to numerous scholars, the origin of the term Jubilee ? more commonly known as Holy Year ? can be traced back to the Hebrew yabel which refers to the ram?s horn used once every 50 years in accordance with Mosaic law to announce a year of forgiveness and pardon for all debts contracted during the previous 50 year period.
Christianity adopted this concept, carrying it over to the spiritual realm, since the greatest of debts in Christian eyes was sin ? and this comprehensive pardon was meant to cover all sins. Granted without limits of territory or social class and, for the first time, over a long span of time, the great pardon represented an extraordinarily important benefit for believers.
The first Christian Jubilee came about spontaneously during a period of tormented religious events and political upheavals, constituting a brief parenthesis of piety and rectitude amidst a time of troubles. It embodied the Romans? increasing need for sanctifying penitence and charity while at the same time representing Europe?s universal long for a return to peace and spiritual brotherhood.
This paperback book with clear mylar ?dust jacket? takes you through the ceremonies with His Holiness Pope Paul VI. The Holy Year was inaugurated on Christmas Eve, 1974, with the Pope striking the Holy Door of St. Peter?s with a silver hammer and requesting in Latin ?Open the Doors of Justice for me.?
The same ritual is repeated the following morning, on Christmas Day, in the other three patriarchal basilicas of St. Maria Maggiore, St. John in Lateran, and St. Paul Without the Walls, by three Cardinals designated by the Pope.
The book has 94 pages of full color photos and text; it?s a wonderful tour of Rome and the basilicas. It is copyright 1975 by Bonechi of Florence, Italy, and in excellent condition no marks inside. The pages are intact and unmarked, and the covers are protected by the mylar ?dust jacket.?
